Kidney Cleanse

The kidneys are delicate organs with the adrenal glands sitting on top of them. The kidneys are really not detox organs–technically, all detox should go through the liver and ideally, the liver has the time and energy to handle everything which means the kidneys aren’t forced to handle any viruses/bacteria/heavy metals/etc. but most of our kidneys have been through the ringer and need some TLC.

To support the kidneys and start the cleansing process it is important to get sodium balanced in the body. One of the best ways to do this is by drinking 12 ounces of water with 1 tsp of sea salt dissolved in it before bed or upon rising. (Note: this is wonderful to eliminate edema anytime, including pregnancy and is very helpful for people with frequent urination-including pregnant women. People with migraines also report relief from this practice.)

In addition to the sea salt water, the kidneys can be cleansed and supported with herbs and herbal teas. You can purchase a pre-made mix of tea if desired and take for 30 days (in increments of 6 days on, 2 days off–e.g. drink the tea throughout the day for 6 days in a row, and then don’t drink the tea for 2 days, and repeat that cycle for 30 days.)  You can also mix your own tea by obtaining the following herbs and mix in equal parts (1 ounce of each):

  • Cats Claw
  • Chickory
  • Majoram
  • Gravel root
  • Parsley
  • Comfrey
  • Hydrangea Root
  • Goldenrod
  • Uva Ursi
  • Juniper (optional)

Mix dried herbs in a large seal-able container. To prepare, take 1/4 cup of the herbal mixture and boil with 4 cups of water for 20 minutes and then allow to sit and soak overnight (you can drink after boiling if needed but it will be stronger if it soaks overnight). Sip half of tea in-between breakfast and lunch and the other half in-between lunch and dinner (or dinner and bedtime) for 6 days on, 2 days off for a cycle of 30 days.
